Kala (Sanskirt) means “time”. In the Vedas, time is equated with the kala (consciousness time). Kala is the source of the divisions of time. It unites procession, recession and stasis.
Makara is the astrological sign of Capricorn (December 22 to January 20). The makara is the vehicle of Varuna, deity of the sky, of water and of the celestial ocean, as well as a deity of law and of the underworld.
Kirtimukha describes a swallowing fierce monster face with huge fangs and gaping mouth.
Kirti means “fame, glory” and mukha refers to the “face”.
